Important Change to Golf Cart Laws

IMPORTANT CHANGE TO GOLF CART LAWS:

In South Carolina, a new law mandates that children under 12 must wear seatbelts when riding in golf carts on public roadways. This applies to golf carts operating on roads with speed limits of 35 mph or less. Local governments also have the authority to establish additional rules regarding golf cart operation within their jurisdictions.

Local governments can enact stricter rules for golf cart operation, potentially prohibiting them in certain areas.

  • Permitting and Registration:

Golf carts must be permitted and registered with the SCDMV, and drivers must be at least 16 years old with a valid driver’s license.

  • Insurance and Lights:

Golf carts must have liability insurance, and working headlights and taillights are required for night operations.

Town of Edisto Beach Golf Cart Renewal Information

posted 6/15/23 Please check your state golf cart renewal information.  If you have to renew the state decal, please take your new state decal (after it arrives), a copy of your current insurance policy on the golf cart and the Town form (available at www.townofedistobeach.com) to the Police Department so that they have all the updated information.  If you need a new town decal, the cost is $15.00.  No new decals will be issued without all paperwork being up-to-date.  Only property owners are allowed to own golf carts, subject to individual HOA rules.  If you have questions, please call Amy Johnson, Court Clerk, at 843-869-2505.

Town of Edisto Beach Golf Cart Permits Expiration

Posted 11/30/22:  Please be advised that Town of Edisto Beach permits for golf carts with the 2022 punched will expire December 31, 2022.  Renewals can be made with the Town of Edisto Beach Police Department (AMY JOHNSON), Monday through Friday 8:30am-4:00pm.  You will need proof of Edisto Beach property ownership, insurance, and State registration.  The fee is $15.00 (cash or check). There is no grace period for expired decals.

Town of Edisto Beach Considering Change to Golf Card Ordinance

Good afternoon Ocean Ridge Friends,

We want to make you aware that the Town of Edisto Beach is considering a change to the Golf Cart Ordinance. Click proposed ordinance for more details. If adopted, a significant change in the ordinance would be that all golf cart owners purchase a decal from the Town annually at a cost of $5. Please note, there would be no charge for a decal to any person 65 years of age or older who is a permanent resident, living full time at the premise or the premise is a second home for the person for whom the decal is issued.
